Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Manhattan Beach, CA
Common questions from homeowners in Manhattan Beach and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often should a dryer vent in Manhattan Beach actually get cleared?
Once a year covers most households here. There's no real heating season on the South Bay coast, but laundry volume stays moderate and steady all twelve months, so lint builds at a constant pace instead of spiking in winter. Households with kids, beach towels, or a dryer running several loads a day should plan on more like every eight months. If your run is long or has multiple elbows, shorten that interval again.

What are the warning signs that lint has blocked the duct?
The clearest one is a load that needs a second cycle to finish. Reach into the drum at the end of a run. If the clothes are hot and still damp, air isn't leaving the house. Other signals: the laundry room feels humid or smells scorched, the outside flap no longer swings open when the dryer runs, and the top of the machine gets hot to the touch. On foggy marine-layer mornings a damp vent compounds the problem, because the duct never fully dries out between loads.

What does a visit look like from the time I open the door?
We pull the dryer out, disconnect it, and look at the transition hose behind it first, since that's where crushed duct and lint packing usually hide. Then we run a rotating brush on a flexible rod through the full duct from the inside, with a vacuum capturing what comes loose so it doesn't end up on your floor. We go to the exterior termination, clear the flap and the last few feet from outside, and check that the damper moves freely. We reconnect the dryer, run it, and measure airflow at the hood so you can see it's moving. Anything we find damaged or disconnected, we show you before we touch it.

How much time should I set aside?
A straight ground-floor run in one of the older beach cottages or postwar stucco bungalows is usually under an hour. The three-story rebuilds that went up from the 1990s on often put the laundry on the top floor with a long vertical run, and those take closer to two hours. Add time if the termination is on a roof or buried behind a deck. If we find a nest or a collapsed section, we'll tell you what the extra work involves before we start it.

Why do two dryer vent jobs on the same street land at different numbers?
Duct length and how many turns it makes drive most of it. A second-floor or third-floor laundry with a vertical run through a rebuild is more work than a cottage venting four feet through a wall. Access matters here too: lots are narrow and side yards are often under five feet, so a termination wedged against a neighbor's wall or fence takes longer to reach and clear from outside. Roof terminations, nest removal, and replacing crushed flex behind the dryer all add cost. We look at your setup first, tell you what we see, and you approve the number before any tools come out.

Is it the vent or is my dryer going bad?
Run a load with the duct disconnected from the back of the machine and the dryer pointed into the room. If it dries normally that way, the machine is fine and the duct is the problem. If it still runs long with nothing attached, the heating element, thermostat, or moisture sensor is the suspect, and you want an appliance tech. A dryer that shuts off mid-cycle and restarts is usually tripping a thermal limit from backpressure, which points at the vent. We'll do that check with you rather than sell you a cleaning you don't need.

Rigid metal duct or the flexible kind. Does the choice change anything?
It changes a lot. Rigid metal has smooth walls, so lint slides through instead of catching, and it holds its shape when the dryer gets pushed back against the wall. Flexible foil and plastic duct has ridges that trap lint at every corrugation, and it crushes easily in the tight gap behind a machine. Those tight gaps are common in older beach cottages where the laundry was fit into a closet or a converted porch. We use rigid pipe for the run and a short, listed metal transition hose at the machine, and we'll flag any plastic flex we find as something to replace.

There's a bird or a rodent living in my vent. What happens then?
A broken or missing damper flap is an open door, and sparrows and finches take it. We clear the nest material from both ends, vacuum out the debris, and check whether anything chewed or pulled the duct apart inside the wall. Then we install a proper termination hood with a working flap and a guard that keeps animals out but doesn't catch lint. Screen mesh is the wrong answer, because it clogs in weeks. If there's a live animal in there we'll tell you straight and you'll want a wildlife service first.

My vent travels a long way before it reaches outside. Any way to fix that?
Sometimes, yes. The first thing we look for is a closer exterior wall, because a shorter path with fewer elbows beats any add-on device. On the narrow walk-street lots that's not always possible, since side yards are under five feet and the termination has to clear a neighboring wall or fence without blowing lint at it. Where rerouting isn't realistic, an inline booster fan wired to run with the dryer can carry a long or mostly vertical run, which is common in the three-story rebuilds. We'll measure the run, count the turns, and tell you which option actually applies to your house.

Do you have openings today, and how far does your service area reach?
Same-day slots are usually available if you call in the morning, and we hold time most afternoons for dryers that have stopped drying. We work all of Manhattan Beach: the Sand Section walk streets, the Tree Section, the Hill Section, east of Sepulveda, and the Village. Nearby South Bay towns in Los Angeles County are fine too. Tell us whether the laundry is on the ground floor or upstairs when you call, and we'll bring the right rod length the first time.
